HOW AFFIRMING THERAPY WORKS
What neurodivergent-affirming therapy is, and how it helps
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy starts from a simple shift: your brain isn’t broken. Instead of trying to make you look or act more “neurotypical,” the work centers how you actually think, feel, and process — ADHD, autism, and the masking, sensory load, and burnout that often come with them.
In practice, that means evidence-based therapy — including CBT and approaches adapted for neurodivergent minds — used to ease anxiety, low mood, and overwhelm without pathologizing who you are. Your clinician adjusts pacing, communication, and goals to fit you, builds on your strengths, and helps you set boundaries and accommodations that lower the daily cost of masking, so support feels sustainable instead of like one more thing to perform.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is affirming therapy online or in person?
ScienceWorks provides neurodivergent-affirming therapy by secure telehealth to clients across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office if you prefer. Most attend online from wherever they feel most regulated; in-person in Nashville is available on request.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to begin. Many clients are self-identified, questioning, or late-identified, and affirming therapy can support you whether or not you’ve been formally assessed. If diagnostic clarity would help, we can talk through options.
What does affirming therapy cost, and will insurance help?
We review fees, scheduling, and any out-of-network reimbursement options before you commit, so there are no surprises. Many clients use FSA or HSA funds or monthly superbills — we’ll walk you through what applies to your situation.
