HOW I-CBT WORKS

What i-CBT is, and how it eases chronic worry

Inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (i-CBT) is an evidence-based talk therapy with a clear focus. In generalized anxiety, worry usually starts with a what if — what if something goes wrong, what if I can't cope — that feels urgent even when nothing around you says there's a real threat.

i-CBT calls the engine behind that worry inferential confusion: trusting an imagined possibility over what your senses and experience actually tell you. Rather than only managing symptoms or forcing positive thoughts, your clinician helps you see how each worry is built and reconnect with reality, so the what if loses its grip. It's a collaborative, reasoning-focused approach, and many people find it a more comfortable fit than exposure-heavy methods.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is i-CBT available online, or do I need to come in person?

ScienceWorks provides i-CBT for anxiety entirely online by secure telehealth, to clients located in Tennessee during sessions. There's no in-person option — you meet from home or wherever you're comfortable, which removes travel as a barrier to starting care.

How is i-CBT different from regular CBT for worry?

Traditional CBT often challenges anxious thoughts or builds coping skills. i-CBT works one step earlier — on the reasoning that makes a "what if" feel real in the first place — so the worry has less to stand on. Many people find it a natural, less effortful fit.

Will I have to do exposure exercises?

No. i-CBT doesn't rely on deliberate exposure. Instead, it helps you see how each worry is built and rebuild trust in your own judgment and senses, so the "what if" loosens its hold. It's collaborative and paced with you.
