HOW IT WORKS
What ACT is, and how it helps you live with trauma
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps you change your relationship with trauma rather than fighting to erase every painful memory, thought, or feeling. With your therapist, you learn to notice difficult inner experiences without being ruled by them, and to unhook from the thoughts that keep you stuck — a skill ACT calls psychological flexibility.
From there, the work turns outward: you reconnect with the values, people, and goals that avoidance has crowded out, and take small, meaningful steps toward the life you want — even while hard feelings are still present. At ScienceWorks we adapt ACT for neurodivergent clients and complex histories, drawing on mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based strategies — structured, but never one-size-fits-all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is ACT for trauma available online or in person?
ScienceWorks provides ACT for trauma by secure telehealth to adults and teens across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office if you prefer. Most people attend online from wherever they feel safe; in-person visits in Nashville are available on request.
Does ACT mean I have to accept or relive what happened?
No. Acceptance in ACT means making room for painful thoughts and feelings so they hold less power over you — not approving of the trauma or forcing yourself to relive it. You work at your own pace, building skills to stay present and move toward what matters to you.
What does ACT for trauma cost, and do you take insurance?
We're an out-of-network, self-pay practice, so insurance session caps don't limit your care. We accept all major cards (FSA/HSA eligible), offer interest-free payment plans, and provide monthly superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We review fees before any ongoing sessions.
