UNDERSTANDING ADULT ADHD

Why ADHD in women is so often missed until midlife

ADHD was long thought of as a boys’ condition, so girls who were quietly inattentive rather than disruptive were rarely flagged. Many women learn to compensate — over-preparing, list-making, people-pleasing — and carry undiagnosed ADHD for decades while wondering why everything takes so much more effort than it seems to for everyone else.

Midlife often tips that balance. As hormones shift and demands pile up, the old workarounds stop holding and long-standing traits become impossible to ignore. A thorough adult assessment looks past the coping to the underlying pattern — using a structured interview, validated rating scales, and your history — so you finally get an accurate name for what you have lived with, and a plan built for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is it too late to get assessed for ADHD?

Not at all. Many women are first assessed in their forties and fifties, once midlife makes long-standing ADHD impossible to ignore. A diagnosis at any age opens the door to treatment, accommodations, and a lot of self-understanding.

Is the assessment online or in person?

ScienceWorks assesses entirely online by secure telehealth, for women located in Tennessee during sessions. There’s no in-person option — you take part from anywhere in the state, which removes travel and long local waitlists.

Could this be perimenopause instead of ADHD?

It can be both, and they interact. Falling estrogen can worsen ADHD symptoms, while ADHD makes midlife changes harder to manage. The assessment is designed to tell them apart so your plan addresses what’s actually driving things.
