HOW IT WORKS

What DBT is, and how it steadies anxiety and strong emotions

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a skills-based approach that helps when anxiety arrives with intense emotions, fast physical arousal, or urges to react. Instead of trying to argue with anxious thoughts, you build four core skill sets — mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness — that let you ride out a wave of anxiety without it taking over.

With your therapist you practice concrete tools you can use in the moment: grounding when panic spikes, soothing the body's alarm, and responding to stress instead of reacting to it. At ScienceWorks we use DBT skills to help you build a steadier relationship with emotion — adapted for neurodivergent clients and co-occurring concerns, structured, and never one-size-fits-all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is DBT for anxiety available online or in person?

ScienceWorks offers DBT for anxiety by secure telehealth to anyone in Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office for those who prefer it. Most clients choose online sessions, which remove travel and let you start from home; in-person visits in Nashville are available on request.

Isn't DBT just for borderline personality disorder?

No. DBT was first developed for intense emotions, and its skills now help many people whose anxiety comes with strong emotional reactivity or panic. At ScienceWorks we use DBT skills — mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation — to help you steady anxiety, whatever the diagnosis.

What does DBT for anxiety cost, and do you take insurance?

We're an out-of-network, self-pay practice, so insurance session caps don't limit your care. We accept all major cards (FSA/HSA eligible), offer interest-free payment plans, and provide monthly superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We review fees before any ongoing sessions.
