HOW IT WORKS
What family therapy is, and how it works
Family therapy treats the pattern between people rather than locating the problem in one person. Your clinician looks at how conflict starts, who gets pulled in, which roles have hardened, and where the household’s routines are quietly making things harder. Sessions usually include the family members the pattern actually involves, which is often not everyone.
From there the work is practical. Families rehearse clearer requests, agree on expectations everyone can actually hold, and build repair habits for after a blow-up. At ScienceWorks we draw on family systems work and parent management training, and we adapt the approach for neurodivergent families where standard parenting advice often misfires.

WHY CLIENTS CHOOSE SCIENCEWORKS
Independent, evidence-based, affirming
Because we’re independent and out-of-network, your care is shaped by what actually works — not by session caps or insurance limits.
You work with a clinician trained in family systems, so sessions address the pattern between you rather than one person’s symptoms.
Care is neurodivergent-affirming and available by secure telehealth across Tennessee, or in person at our Nashville office.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Does the whole family have to attend?
No. Your clinician decides with you which members to include, and that often changes over the course of care. Some sessions involve parents only, some the whole household, and some a single parent and child working on one relationship.
Is family therapy available online or in person?
Both. We see families by secure telehealth anywhere in Tennessee and in person at our Nashville office on Elm Hill Pike. Video often works well for families because it removes travel and makes it easier to get everyone into the same session.
How is this different from parent management training?
Parent management training coaches parents in specific behavior strategies, usually without the child in the room. Family therapy works with the relationships themselves. Your consult will help you decide which fits, and the two can be combined.
