HOW IT WORKS

What the Gottman Method is, and how it works

The Gottman Method is a structured approach to couples therapy built on decades of observational research into how partners actually interact. Rather than opening with advice, it opens with assessment: your therapist looks at how the two of you handle conflict, how you repair afterward, and where friendship and shared meaning have thinned.

From there the work is specific and skills-based. You practice slowing escalating conflict, replacing criticism and defensiveness with direct requests, and rebuilding the everyday connection that makes disagreement survivable. At ScienceWorks the method is adapted to the couple in front of us, including neurodivergent partners and couples carrying anxiety, depression, or trauma alongside relationship strain.

WHY CLIENTS CHOOSE SCIENCEWORKS

Independent, evidence-based, affirming

Because we’re independent and out-of-network, your care is shaped by what actually works — not by session caps or insurance limits.

You’re matched with a clinician who does couples work, using the Gottman Method rather than a general talk-therapy approach.

Care is neurodivergent-affirming and available by secure telehealth across Tennessee, or in person at our Nashville office.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is couples therapy available online or in person?

Both. ScienceWorks offers couples therapy by secure telehealth to partners located anywhere in Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office on Elm Hill Pike. Many couples choose video because it removes travel and makes scheduling around work and childcare far easier.

Do both partners have to attend every session?

Usually yes, though the Gottman Method includes individual sessions early on as part of the assessment. Your therapist explains the structure up front and can adjust it if one partner’s schedule or comfort makes attendance hard.

What does couples therapy cost, and do you take insurance?

We are out-of-network by design, which keeps caseloads small. Couples session fees vary by clinician and are confirmed before you commit. We provide monthly superbills, and Thrizer can check your out-of-network eligibility instantly.
