HOW I-CBT WORKS
What I-CBT is, and how we adapt it for neurodivergent adults
Inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT) treats OCD as a problem of obsessional doubt — a feared story your mind builds and then treats as real. For autistic and ADHD adults, that doubt can be especially sticky, and OCD rituals often blur with routines, special interests, or stimming, which generic therapy misreads.
I-CBT works on the reasoning that gives the obsession its grip, instead of pushing exposure that can overwhelm a sensitive nervous system. With your therapist you map how the doubt is constructed, and sort what is OCD from what is simply how your brain works — so you keep your routines and lose the compulsions. We pace sessions to your processing and sensory needs, and adapt I-CBT for co-occurring anxiety, ADHD, and autistic experience.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is this OCD therapy online or in person?
ScienceWorks provides I-CBT for autistic and ADHD adults with OCD by secure telehealth to clients across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office if you prefer. Attending online from home is often easier on sensory and energy needs; in-person in Nashville is available on request.
How do you tell OCD apart from autism or ADHD?
That's a core part of the work. We look at whether a behavior is driven by obsessional doubt and distress (OCD) or is a comfortable routine, interest, or stim (autism or ADHD). I-CBT targets only the OCD, so your helpful routines stay intact.
Is I-CBT easier than exposure-based therapy?
Many neurodivergent adults find it more tolerable. I-CBT resolves the doubt behind the obsession instead of pushing repeated exposure that can overwhelm a sensitive nervous system, and sessions are paced to your processing and sensory needs.
