HOW I-CBT WORKS
What I-CBT is, and how it eases health anxiety
Inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT) treats health anxiety as a problem of obsessional doubt. A normal sensation — a skipped heartbeat, a headache, a patch of skin — becomes proof of serious illness, even when exams and tests say otherwise. The fear stops feeling like a worry and starts feeling like a fact.
Instead of chasing each symptom with more checking, searching, or reassurance, I-CBT works on the reasoning that makes the illness story feel real. With your therapist you trace how the doubt is built from possibility rather than evidence, then practice trusting what your body and your doctors actually show you. As that inferential confusion clears, the pull to scan, test, and seek reassurance loosens. At ScienceWorks we adapt I-CBT for co-occurring anxiety and neurodivergent clients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is I-CBT for health anxiety online or in person?
ScienceWorks provides I-CBT for health anxiety by secure telehealth to clients across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office if you prefer. Most clients attend online from home, work, or school; in-person visits in Nashville are available on request.
What if my symptoms turn out to be real?
I-CBT never dismisses real symptoms. We encourage appropriate medical care and work on the excessive worry layered on top — the doubt that keeps you checking and seeking reassurance even after your doctors are reassured. The goal is balanced thinking, not ignoring your health.
How is I-CBT different from regular CBT?
Standard CBT challenges anxious thoughts after they appear. I-CBT works one step upstream — on the reasoning that makes a normal sensation feel like proof of illness in the first place, so the doubt stops feeling like a fact. Many people find it a natural fit for health anxiety.
