HOW IT WORKS

What ERP is, and how it works for OCD

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the most studied, first-line behavioral treatment for OCD. Together with your therapist, you gradually and safely face the thoughts, images, and situations that trigger anxiety — while practicing not performing the usual ritual or reassurance-seeking.

Over repeated practice, two things happen: the anxiety naturally rises and falls without the compulsion, and your brain learns that the feared outcome doesn’t depend on the ritual. The grip of the cycle loosens. At ScienceWorks we adapt ERP for neurodivergent clients and complex presentations, drawing on ERP, CBT, inference-based CBT, and mindfulness-based strategies — structured, but never one-size-fits-all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is ERP for OCD available online or in person?

ScienceWorks provides ERP for OCD entirely online via secure telehealth, to adults and teens located in Tennessee during sessions. There’s no in-person option, which lets you attend from home, work, or school — wherever you’re most comfortable — and removes travel time as a barrier to starting care.

Is ERP safe if I also have ADHD, autism, anxiety, or trauma?

Yes. ERP can be adapted for co-occurring conditions, paced carefully, and combined with grounding and trauma-aware strategies as needed.

How long does ERP take, and what about fees or insurance?

Timelines vary with severity and goals. We review fees, scheduling, and any insurance or out-of-network reimbursement options before you commit to ongoing sessions.
