HOW PDA SUPPORT FOR ADULTS WORKS
PDA in adults, and how affirming support helps
Demand avoidance doesn't disappear in adulthood. For autistic adults with a PDA profile, even self-chosen tasks can trigger an anxiety-driven need to resist — which looks like procrastination or shutdown from the outside, but feels like a loss of control from the inside. Standard advice to “just push through” usually makes it worse.
PDA-informed support for adults works with that wiring instead of against it. Your clinician helps you understand your own patterns, reduce the anxiety that fuels avoidance, and design low-demand ways to approach work, relationships, and daily life that preserve your sense of autonomy. We also address the burnout that so often comes with a lifetime of masking and pressure. Because PDA in adults is still under-researched, we're transparent about what's known and what isn't.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is support online or in person?
ScienceWorks provides PDA-informed support by secure telehealth to autistic adults across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office if you prefer. Being at home keeps you in control of your environment, which often lowers demand-related anxiety; in-person in Nashville is available too.
Does PDA really apply to adults?
Yes. Much of the PDA conversation centers on children, but the profile continues into adulthood — often as procrastination, shutdown, or burnout around demands. We focus specifically on how demand avoidance shows up in adult life.
Do I need a PDA or autism diagnosis?
No. PDA isn't a formal diagnosis, so you don't need one to start. We work with the demand-avoidant pattern you recognize in yourself, whether or not you're formally autistic. If you want to explore an autism evaluation, we can help.
