HOW PE WORKS

What prolonged exposure is, and how it eases PTSD

Prolonged exposure (PE) is a structured, evidence-based therapy for PTSD. Trauma teaches the brain to treat memories and reminders as ongoing threats, so you avoid them — and that avoidance keeps the fear alive. PE gently reverses the pattern, at a pace you set, by helping you approach what trauma has made feel dangerous instead of steering around it.

Two kinds of practice do the work: revisiting the traumatic memory in a safe, structured way until it loses its charge, and gradually facing the safe situations you have been avoiding. Over time your nervous system learns the danger has passed, and the memory becomes something you can carry rather than something that controls you. At ScienceWorks we adapt PE for neurodivergent clients and complex histories, and you never move faster than you are ready to.

WHY CLIENTS CHOOSE SCIENCEWORKS

Independent, evidence-based, affirming

Because we're independent and out-of-network, your care is driven by what actually helps — not by insurance limits or session caps.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is prolonged exposure available online or in person?

ScienceWorks provides prolonged exposure for PTSD in person at our Nashville office and by secure telehealth to adults and teens across Tennessee. In-person visits in Nashville are available on request; most people still attend online from wherever they feel safe.

Will PE make me relive my trauma?

No. PE asks you to revisit the memory in a structured, supported way — not to relive it helplessly. You work at a pace you control, with your therapist guiding each step, so the memory gradually loses its power instead of overwhelming you. Nothing happens before you're ready.

What does prolonged exposure cost, and do you take insurance?

We're an out-of-network, self-pay practice, so insurance session caps don't limit your care. We accept all major cards (FSA/HSA eligible), offer interest-free payment plans, and provide monthly superbills for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We review fees before any ongoing sessions.
