HOW IT WORKS

What ACT is, and how it works for depression

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based, third-wave form of CBT for depression. Instead of arguing with every negative thought, you learn to notice it, loosen its grip, and make room for difficult feelings without letting them run the show.

From there, ACT helps you clarify what genuinely matters to you and take committed action toward it — small, values-guided steps, even while mood is still low. Over time this builds psychological flexibility: the capacity to stay present and keep moving toward the life you want. At ScienceWorks we adapt ACT for neurodivergent clients and co-occurring anxiety, trauma, or ADHD — structured, but never one-size-fits-all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is ACT for depression available online or in person?

ScienceWorks offers ACT for depression both ways: by secure telehealth to adults and teens across Tennessee, and in person at our Nashville office. Many clients choose video sessions to save travel time, while others prefer meeting face-to-face — you can start with whichever fits your life.

How is ACT different from traditional CBT?

Traditional CBT works to change the content of negative thoughts. ACT instead changes your relationship to them — noticing thoughts without being ruled by them — while you take values-guided action. Both are evidence-based, and many people find ACT helpful when fighting thoughts hasn't worked.

How long does ACT take, and what about cost?

Many people feel movement within a course of weekly sessions, though timelines vary with severity and goals. We review fees, scheduling, and any out-of-network reimbursement options up front, so you can decide before committing to ongoing care.
