Neurodivergent in STEM: Why So Many Engineers and Scientists Discover ADHD or Autism as Adults

There is a version of this story we hear often. Someone spent twenty years being good at hard problems. They got the degree, then the job, then the senior title. And somewhere in their thirties or forties, something they had been managing quietly stopped being manageable — usually not the technical work, but everything wrapped around it.
If you are reading this because a colleague mentioned ADHD, or because a thread about autistic engineers landed uncomfortably close to home, you are in a large group. In 2023, an estimated 15.5 million U.S. adults had a current ADHD diagnosis, and roughly half of them received it at age 18 or later [1]. Late recognition is not the exception. For people in technical fields, there are specific reasons it happens.

The pattern: high performers who hit a wall
The arc is remarkably consistent. School was manageable, sometimes easy, because the work was interesting and the structure was external — someone else set the deadlines. University was harder but survivable, often through last-minute intensity that felt shameful but worked. Early career was fine, because a junior role is mostly bounded technical problems with someone else managing the context.
Then the job changes shape. You get promoted into coordination. The work becomes less about solving the problem and more about tracking twelve problems, remembering what you told whom, and producing written updates about work you have already finished. Nothing about your intelligence has changed. Your performance reviews start using words like "inconsistent" or "needs to communicate more proactively," and you cannot argue with them.
Here is a version of it. You can hold an architecture problem in your head for six hours, and you routinely do — you have shipped things nobody else on the team could have. But you have four unanswered emails from your manager that would each take ninety seconds, and they have been there for eleven days. You know they are there. You think about them while falling asleep. You still cannot make yourself open them. When you finally do, the reply takes two minutes and you feel a wave of relief followed by something closer to grief, because you cannot explain to anyone why that was hard.
Or: you are fine in the work itself and depleted by everything around it. The standup is fifteen minutes and costs you an hour of recovery. The open floor is a low roar you have stopped consciously noticing but which leaves you unable to speak to your family in the evening. You have learned to schedule nothing after 4 p.m. You have learned to eat lunch in your car. None of this reads as a clinical problem — it reads as being an introvert with a commute — until you notice how much of your life is organized around recovering from a job you are objectively good at.

Why STEM selects for — and hides — neurodivergent traits
Two things are true at once, and conflating them causes most of the confusion in this area.
The first is that technical fields do appear to attract people with more autistic traits on average. In the study that introduced the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, students in mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering scored meaningfully higher than the general population — mathematicians averaged 21.8 and computer scientists 21.4, against a control average of 16.4 [2]. That is a real, replicated finding about a trait questionnaire.
The second is that this does not mean engineers are more likely to be autistic. A higher group average on a trait screener is a different claim from a higher diagnosis rate, and the AQ-10 and similar screeners were never built to establish prevalence. The misconception worth naming directly: "engineers score higher on autism screeners" is often repeated as "engineers are usually autistic." The first is supported. The second is not, and no study has established it.
What technical work genuinely does is hide the profiles that are there. Consider what the environment rewards: depth over breadth, precision over social fluency, written asynchronous communication over improvised conversation, and the freedom to care intensely about a narrow domain. Those are accommodations. Nobody labels them that, but a job that lets you wear headphones, work in long uninterrupted blocks, and be valued for knowing one thing extremely well is a job that removes most of the friction an evaluation would normally detect.
A second misconception: "I did well in school, so it can't be ADHD." The short version: strong reasoning ability lets someone compensate for years, and compensation is invisible in a transcript. Rather than repeat that ground here, we would rather point you to it and move on to what is specific to working in a technical field.

ADHD, autism, and AuDHD at work: same field, different friction
People often arrive assuming they need to pick one. In practice the profiles overlap substantially — the largest meta-analysis of co-occurring conditions in autism found ADHD the most frequent, at around 37% overall, with adult estimates near 22% in community samples and 34% in clinical samples, and enormous variation between studies [5]. That range is the honest picture: co-occurrence is common, and precise numbers depend heavily on who was sampled and how.
What is more useful than a percentage is knowing how the friction differs, because the same complaint means different things.
Estimation and time. In ADHD, difficulty estimating a task usually traces to an unstable relationship with time itself — the two-day task and the two-week task feel similar from the inside until one of them is late. In autism, estimation problems more often come from a mismatch between the ticket as written and the actual scope, and from difficulty starting until the ambiguity is resolved.
Meetings. In ADHD, the cost is usually attention drift and the interruption itself — the meeting fractures a block of focus and re-entry is expensive. In autism, the cost is more often the processing load of unstructured social exchange, and it accumulates rather than resolving when the meeting ends.
Sensory load. In autism, sensitivity tends to be consistent: the same fluorescent hum, the same texture, reliably costs something. In ADHD, sensory irritability fluctuates with overall regulatory capacity — the open office is tolerable when you are rested and unbearable when you are already depleted.
If both descriptions keep feeling accurate, do not talk yourself out of that. An evaluation that considers both together is usually the more honest starting point than choosing one and hoping.

The systems side is worth separating from the diagnostic side. Many of the practical fixes are the same regardless of profile, and we have covered those in depth in external systems for ADHD at work. Research on engineers specifically is still thin, but what exists is consistent with the pattern above: a study comparing engineers reporting autism, ADHD, or dyslexia against neurotypical engineers found ADHD-reporting engineers described more disruption from waiting on answers and less interaction outside their immediate team [3], and a qualitative study of software engineers with ADHD documented both real strengths and real difficulty with the non-code parts of the job [4].
When "everyone on my team is like this" stops being reassuring
This is the sentence that delays evaluation more than any other, and it deserves a careful answer rather than a dismissal.
It is often true. If your team genuinely does share your traits, that is meaningful information about the environment, and it is a legitimate reason to feel less alone. The problem is that it answers a question nobody asked. Diagnosis has never been about whether a trait is unusual. It is about whether a pattern is causing you meaningful difficulty across settings — both NICE guidelines for ADHD [6] and for autism in adults [7] are built around impairment and functional impact, not around rarity.
So the useful question is not "is this normal for engineers." It is: what is this costing me, and where is the bill arriving?
Three places it commonly arrives. The first is outside work — you are competent until 6 p.m. and unavailable to your family afterward. The second is at the promotion boundary, when the job stops being technical and the compensations that worked stop covering. The third is in your health, as sustained overload rather than acute crisis.
A third misconception worth stating plainly: "if I were really autistic or ADHD, I would not have gotten this far." That belief keeps a lot of capable people from asking. Getting far and struggling are not mutually exclusive, and in adults the two very often travel together.

There is also a specific pattern worth naming for autistic professionals: sustained masking and overload can produce a state of exhaustion, skill loss, and reduced tolerance for stimulation that is distinct from ordinary job burnout and from depression [8][9]. What an adult evaluation clarifies for a working professional
An evaluation is not a verdict on whether you are struggling enough. It is a structured attempt to answer a question you have probably been asking informally for years.
For a working professional, a good one should do three things. It should distinguish between profiles rather than confirming the first plausible one. It should account for compensation — an adult who has spent twenty years building workarounds will not present like the textbook description, and an evaluator who does not probe for that will miss it. And it should produce something usable: specific recommendations, and, if you want it, documentation that can support a workplace accommodation request. Under the ADA, an employer may only ask medical questions in limited circumstances, and cannot disclose to colleagues that you are receiving an accommodation [10].
Before you book anything, these are worth asking any provider directly:
1. Does this evaluation assess ADHD and autism together, or would a second referral be needed if both look plausible?
2. How does your process account for masking and lifelong compensation in high-achieving adults?
3. What developmental history do you gather, and what happens if I do not have childhood records or anyone left to interview?
4. What do I actually receive at the end — a diagnosis, or a diagnosis plus specific recommendations I can act on?
5. Is the report written in a form I could give an employer if I choose to request accommodations?

Where to start
If you are not sure this is worth pursuing, a screener is a low-cost first step — the ASRS for ADHD symptoms, or the AQ-10 linked above for autistic traits. Neither is a diagnosis. Both are useful for deciding whether a fuller conversation is warranted.
A simple heuristic for what to do next. If your main cost is inconsistency — starting, finishing, tracking, remembering — ADHD is the better opening question. If your main cost is the cumulative energy of social and sensory processing, autism is. If the answer is honestly both, ask for an evaluation that looks at both. What is a neurodivergent professional?
Neurodivergent is an umbrella term for people whose brains process information differently than is typical, including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and related profiles. A neurodivergent professional is simply someone working in a skilled role who has one of those profiles. It is a description, not a diagnosis, and it says nothing about capability. Many people use it for years before any formal evaluation confirms which profile fits.
Are engineers more likely to have ADHD or autism?
The honest answer is that we do not have solid prevalence data for engineers specifically. What research does show is that people in mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering score higher on average on autistic-trait questionnaires than the general population. Higher average traits in a group is not the same as a higher diagnosis rate, and no study has established that engineers are diagnosed with ADHD or autism more often than anyone else.
What percentage of software engineers are neurodivergent?
No reliable figure exists, and any specific percentage you see online should be treated with caution. The largest analysis of the 2022 Stack Overflow Developer Survey compared engineers who reported autism, ADHD, or dyslexia against neurotypical engineers, but a voluntary developer survey cannot produce a population prevalence rate. It tells us something useful about experience at work, not about how common these profiles are.
Do I need a diagnosis if I am succeeding at work?
That depends entirely on what you want a diagnosis to do. Nobody needs one to justify their difficulties or to deserve support. An evaluation is worth considering when you want an explanation for a pattern that keeps repeating, when the cost of holding your performance together has become the problem, or when you need documentation for workplace accommodations. Succeeding at work does not rule anything out.
Can someone with autism be an engineer?
Yes, and many autistic people work in engineering and the sciences. Autism is diagnosed on the basis of social communication differences and restricted or repetitive patterns that cause meaningful difficulty, not on the basis of job performance. A diagnosis describes how someone processes and experiences the world. It does not describe a ceiling on what they can do professionally.
